Sargassum is a free-floating brown seaweed that drifts across the Atlantic and washes ashore along the Mexican Caribbean. It is not pollution and fresh sargassum is not dangerous to touch. After a day or two piled on hot sand it decomposes and gives off a sulphur smell — that smell, not the seaweed itself, is what most complaints are about.
It is the single biggest variable in whether a Tulum beach day is glorious or disappointing. It arrives in rafts pushed by wind and current, not as a continuous brown tide. A heavy week is routinely followed by a clear one. That is why a live camera beats a seasonal average: the season tells you the odds, the camera tells you the day.
Along this coast the season broadly runs May through October, with June, July and August usually the heaviest months. Arrivals as early as March have become more common in recent years. November through April is the historically quieter window — not a guarantee of clear sand, but the odds are on your side.

The University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch System, which tracks the Atlantic bloom by satellite, reported that by July 2026 the total quantity across most regions was second only to the 2025 record, and that beaching events continued around the Caribbean through that month. In short: 2026 is another heavy year. Planning around it is worth the effort. What that does not mean is a brown beach for six months.

Luxury Jungle VIBE sits inland in AMARI Uptown, about 10 minutes from the beach. That is the useful fact. Sargassum is a beach problem. It does not reach the villa, the private pool, the jungle canopy, or the cenotes.
If you are choosing dates: November–April remains the statistically quieter beach window. If you are travelling in peak sargassum season anyway, book the villa for the pool and the jungle, and treat the beach as a bonus you verify that morning — not as the reason for the trip.
